Texas Men Claim Big 12 Relay Crown

LINCOLN, Nebraska, October 13. TEXAS collected victories in 13 events Friday en route to a convincing win in the Big 12 Relay Meet at Nebraska’s Devaney Center Natatorium. The Longhorns captured the meet with 119 points, while Texas A&M took second with 91 and Missouri placed third with 74.

Texas’ versatility was on display Friday, as 12 Longhorns had a hand in the 13 victories. Leading the way were senior Thomas Sacco (Dallas, Texas) and junior Daniel Rohleder (Austin, Texas), who each were a part of six winning relay teams.

Junior Matthew McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.), sophomore Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) and freshman Ricky Berens (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied five victories, while junior Caleb McDermott (Canyon Lake, Texas) added four wins for Texas.

Texas also was victorious in the competition’s diving element, as the Longhorns swept the one- and three-meter diving relays. Sophomore David Rosen (The Woodlands, Texas), freshman Michael Wong (Cerritos, Calif.) and senior Bailey Gao (Delta, B.C.) claimed the one-meter relay with a total of 288.70 and the three-meter event with a score of 311.85.

The relay meet serves as an opportunity for Big 12 teams to compete in events not typically found in standard collegiate meets. With relay teams usually consisting of four student-athletes, several of Friday’s events were contested with three student-athletes per relay team. Texas claimed six of these relay events – the 300 butterfly; 300 backstroke; 1500 freestyle; 150 butterfly; 150 backstroke and 800 medley.
