Russia Lights Up Prelims at FINA Junior Synchro World Champs

FOSHAN, China, October 7. RUSSIA opened the first day of competition at the FINA Junior Synchronized Swimming World Championships with stellar performances in the team free routine and duet preliminary rounds.

In the team session, Russia’s contingent of Aleksandra Patskevich, Aleksandra ElChinova, Viktoria Anufrieva, Svetlana Ponkratova, Daria Korobova, Tatiana Zavalishina, Veronika Fedulova and Anna Udovik dominated the free routine portion of the day. The team tallied a 47.50 in technical merit and a 46.90 for artistic impression for a final total of 94.40 to lead after prelims

Spain’s squad of Ona Carbonell, Cristina Violan, Laia Blanco, Carolina Lopez, Paula Klamburg, Rocio Escudero, Laura Lopez and Paula Alcorta snared second out of prelims with a 92.90 overall tally. The Spaniards put together 46.60 points in technical merit and 46.30 points from artistic impression.

Japan’s team of Yukiko Inui, Mai Nakamura, Chiaki Kagaya, Yuma Kawai, Miho Arai, Yumi Adachi, Yui Ueminami and Natsuki Ohhara rounded out the top three with a 92.20 tally. The Japanese proved consistent with matching 46.10 totals in both technical merit and artistic impression.

Russia also led the field in the duet preliminary session. The duo of Volkova Antonina and Volkova Sofia totaled 94.90 points with 47.60 from artistic impression and 47.30 in technical merit.

Meanwhile, Spain’s twosome of Carbonell and Violan posted a 93.40 for second place. The Spaniards tallied matching 46.70 totals in both technical merit and artistic impression.

Just like in the team free routine prelims, Japan grabbed third as Inui and Nakamura notched 92.90 points. The Japanese registered 46.60 points in technical merit and 46.30 points from artistic impression.

The championships continue through Wednesday. Sunday features preliminary rounds in solo and free combination. Figure competition occurs on Monday, before finals in duet and free combination happen on Tuesday. The meet concludes with solo and team finals on Wednesday.
