Hannan Joins Staff at Washington

SEATTLE, Washington, October 4. TOMMY Hannan will join the University of Washington coaching staff for the 2006-07 season, head coach Whitney Hite announced. Hannan embarks on his first coaching job after successful swimming careers at the collegiate and international levels and will work primarily with the sprinters. He will also oversee recruiting for the men’s team.

Hannan was a three-time member of the USA National Team and was a member of the gold medal-winning 400 medley relay team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Hannan served as team captain at the 2003 USA Pan American Games and won a gold medal at the 1999 World University Games.

“I am thrilled to have Tommy Hannan as part of our staff here at Washington,” said Hite. “Anytime you can add an Olympian and a coach of his expertise to your program, it is a major step forward. Tommy will be able to add his vast technical knowledge of swimming and passion for the sport to this program and raise the overall level of excellence of the men’s and women’s swimming teams here at Washington.”

A Baltimore native, Hannan swam four years at the University of Texas where he won thee NCAA team tiles from 2000-2002. He also won two NCAA titles in the 400 medley relay and one in the 400 freestyle relay, setting American and NCAA records in the event. A 17-time All-American, Hannan served as the Longhorns’ team captain during his junior and senior campaigns, and graduated with a degree in finance in 2003.

“I am very excited to join the rich tradition of Husky athletics,” said Hannan. “There is a lot of potential with this team and I look forward to accomplishing great things with these athletes.”
