Thorpe Returning to Australia to Prep for World Champs Trials

SYDNEY, September 21. AFTER spending time in Los Angeles, training with Dave Salo, Ian Thorpe is scheduled to return to Australia at the end of the month to continue his tuneup for the World Championship Trials, scheduled for December in Brisbane. Although he’s been out of the water since February, the result of injuries and sickness, Thorpe is expected to race the 100 and 200 freestyles at Trials.

Thorpe, of course, has been out of action on the international scene since the Athens Olympics in 2004. There, Thorpe won gold in the 200 and 400 freestyles, raising his career total to five gold medals in Olympic action. It has not been determined if Thorpe will race in any meets prior to the World Champs Trials. The World Championships will be held in March in Melbourne.

The return of Thorpe would provide a significant boost to the Aussie men, whose stance on the global scene has taken a dip. By focusing on the 100 and 200 freestyles, Thorpe is bypassing the 400 free, an event in which he is the two-time defending Olympic titlist. Thorpe is the world-record holder in the 200 and 400 free events.
