Gibson Named BEST Head Coach

PHOENIX, Arizona, September 14. DAVE Gibson has been named the head coach of the Brophy East Swim Team (BEST), formerly the Phoenix Swim Club, located in Phoenix, Ariz. Gibson replaces Dennis Pursley, who is leaving to become the general manager of the Mission Viejo Nadadores.

Gibson, an ASCA level 5 coach, has mentored some of the top age-group talent to come out of the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club located in North Carolina. During the past year, Gibson coached not only Swimming World Magazine’s Male National High School Swimmer of the Year, Ricky Berens, he also helped Matthew and Sean Patton and Keri McAfee achieve Olympic Trials cuts.

When contacted, Dave commented that, “Brophy is a great sport group with great people and great facilities. I could not be more thrilled and can’t wait to get on deck. A new Phoenix is rising.”

During his time at MAC, Gibson grew the club from 560 swimmers to 650 swimmers and increased the budget from $1.5 million to $1.9 million. Additionally, MAC became a USA Swimming Gold Medal team as well as finished second in the USA Swimming Virtual Club Championships. Another feather in MAC’s cap during Gibson’s oversight came with the all-time USA Swimming Swim-A-Thon record in 2005.

The USA Swimming National Team Coach secured North Carolina Senior Coach of the Year honors in 2004-05. He has also coached a pair of Olympians and an American record holder.

Gibson also has been on the staff of USA Swimming teams for the Olympic Festivals, Goodwill Games, Short Course World Championships, National Junior Team and World Cup competitions.

“Brophy is honored to have such a seasoned, experienced and accomplished veteran joining our community,” said Adria Renke – Vice President of Brophy College Preparatory High School. BEST is a USA Swimming club run by Brophy.
