United States Sweeps Gold, Silver in Pan Pacs Open Water Event

VICTORIA, British Columbia, Aug. 21. TEAM USA completed an amazing run during the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships on Monday with top-two sweeps in both open water 10-kilometer events.

Chloe Sutton, a 14-year-old from Virginia, won the women’s race held at Victoria’s Elk Lake in 2:04:25, while Kalyn Keller snared silver just four seconds behind in 2:04:29. Meanwhile, Canada’s Tanya Hunks garnered bronze in 2:05:01.

"I kept on feeling my muscles starting to give out a little bit at the end, but I held in there," Sutton said. “I was planning on trying to stay maybe second or third throughout and then sprinting at the end, but I felt uncomfortable staying behind so I just took off and tried to stay in first the whole way."

In addition, Americans Chip Peterson and Fran Crippen battled to the finish in the men’s race with Peterson winding up first in 1:54:26 and Crippen clocking a 1:54.50. Australia’s Travis Nederpelt claimed bronze in 1:55:16.

The race featured entrants from the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and marked the first international competition for the U.S. open water national team since the event was added to the 2008 Olympic program in Beijing in October 2005.
