Davies Wins Second MIF Event of Summer

NEW YORK, August 21. VETERAN open-water swimmer Rondi Davies won her second Manhattan Island Foundation event of the season, the second annual Aquathlon: Stars & Stripes on Sunday, August 20. Her winning time in the swim/run event was 37:28. Second and third place went to Colin Robinson, 30, of New York, who finished in 37:57 and Shane Arters, 37, of Scottsdale, Ariz., with a time of 39:08. Finishing second and third in the women's division were Jenny Higgins, 30, of New York, who finished in 42:01, and Elke Hofmann, 25, of Brooklyn, N.Y., with a time of 46:15.

The Aquathlon: Stars & Stripes, the second of two aquathlons this year, offered participants a 1.5 kilometer swim starting at Riverside Park and exiting at Hudson River Park. Swimmers transitioned to running gear for a flat, fast and scenic 5k run through Riverside Park. The Riverside Park tuneup swim returned to the schedule after a four-year hiatus.

The 1.5 kilometer swim took the same course. John Sullivan, Brooklyn, N.Y., won with a time of 19:07. Following only seconds behind was the women's division winner, Kerri Gubelli from Island Park, N.Y., with a time of 19:11. Finishing second in the women's division, third place overall, was Sarah Merriman, Hoboken, N.J., with a time of 21:42.

The two swim events drew over 150 swimmers representing the tri-state area, eight states, and five countries, ranging in age from 22-64. Events are organized and sponsored by the Manhattan Island Foundation (MIF), the authority on open-water swimming in New York, Hudson River Park Trust, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, Battery Park City Parks Corporation and New York Kayak Company.

Proceeds from the swim benefit the Learn to Swim program, which helps establish swimming programs for children and to rehabilitate swimming pools throughout the city and raise public awareness of the waters that surround New York by supporting efforts to clean and protect them. MIF's next scheduled swim will be the Little Red Lighthouse Swim on Saturday, August 26.
