Four Records Fall at YMCA Nationals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. Aug. 6. FOUR records fell at the YMCA National Championships held Aug. 1-4 in College Park, Md. Todd McGraw of Huntington, W.Va. provided the only individual standard with a 2:04.25 in the 200-meter butterfly to surpass the previous record of 2:04.43 set by Roanoke Central’s Gustavo Calado in 2003.

Meanwhile, a trio of relays fell at the event as Boyertown Area’s contingent of Kathryne Valentine, Shayna Longacre, Emily Christy and Alexandra Allen knocked off the 200-meter medley relay record of 2:01.56 set by Gamble-Nippert Ohio in 2001 with a 2:01.17 performance.

The same quartet also shattered the 400-meter medley relay standard of 4:25.56 previously held by West Shore-Harrisburg with a quick 4:24.11.

Middle Tyger’s squad of David Groseclose, Robert Farr, David Ingraham and Chip Hughes took down the other record with a 7:52.52 in the 800-meter freestyle relay to eclipse the previous time of 7:54.20 set by Ann Arbor 10 years ago in 1996.

Overall, Middle Tyger captured the combined team championship with 746 points built upon a first-place tally of 396 on the men's side and a second-place total of 350 for the women. Upper Main Line Branch came in a distant second with 610 points, but proved to be the most consistent team with a pair of third-place finishes as its men brought home 303 points and its women took 307 points. Meanwhile, Boyertown Area placed third with 600 points by absolutely dominating the women's side of the meet with an incredible 488 points. Boyertown Area's men, however, could not hold up their side of a possible combined team championship by placing 13th with 112 points.
