Kukors Tops Field in 400 I.M. at Speedo Western Sectionals

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, July 20. A rising star on the American scene who has already corralled a handful of national titles, Ariana Kukors is expected to be a major contender in the medley events at the upcoming United States Nationals. Thursday night, she continued her preparation for that meet by winning the 400-meter I.M. at the Speedo Western Sectionals.

Competing at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center, Kukors registered a time of 4:47.89 to snare an easy triumph over Caitlin Iversen (4:55.24). Kukors, who swims for King Aquatics, is expected to challenge for a World Championship Team berth in the 200 and 400 I.M. events. On the men's side, the 400 I.M. was won by Nathan Telep, whose 4:32.18 bettered the 4:34.59 of David Pursley.

In the 200 freestyles, Lauren Thies and Ryan Verlatti stayed on the winning track. After winning the 100 free on Wednesday night, Thies won the 200 distance in 2:02.28. As for Verlatti, also a victor in the 100 free, he took top honors in the 200 free with a swim of 1:52.75. Logan Storie was second with a mark of 1:53.64.
