Komisarz is Sharp at Southern Zone Sectionals

ATHENS, Georgia, July 15. ALTHOUGH the big guns from Club Wolverine bypassed the third day of action at the Southern Zone Sectionals, there was plenty of fast swimming on Saturday night. Leading the way was Rachel Komisarz, who prevailed in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 58.78. That swim held off the 59.40 produced by 17-year-old Elaine Breeden.

In the women’s 400 freestyle, Laura Conway claimed top honors with a performance of 4:17.25, just ahead of the 4:17.98 outing of Claire Maust. On the men’s side, the 400 free was won by Charlie Houchin, one of the rising talents on the American scene. Houchin was timed in 3:54.04, quick enough to hold off Robert Margalis (3:54.44).

Peter Verhoef was the swiftest performer in the men’s 100 fly as he checked in with a time of 54.15. That effort was more than a second clear of John Scott, who placed second in 55.29. Elizabeth Tinnon was the victor of the 100 breaststroke on the women’s side, thanks to a time of 1:10.62. For the men, Mark Gangloff was the 100 breast winner in 1:02.24, ahead of the 1:04.32 of Andrew Bree.
