Women’s FINA World League Water Polo Semifinals Kick Off Today

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., July 12. THE newly-announced USA Women's National Water Polo Team, currently ranked second in the world, is set to prove its dominance against top national teams from around the world in the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) World League Semifinals at the USA Water Polo National Training Center today. This tournament will present some of the highest level of competition prior to the Olympic Games in 2008.

For the preliminary rounds, teams were divided into four groups defined by geographic location and team ranking from the 2005 FINA World Championships. Team USA is grouped with Brazil and Canada. The top six national teams from Group A and Group B will face off at the semifinal rounds on July 12. The round robin tournament will run through July 16, ending with a game between heated rivals USA and Australia at 3 p.m.

Simultaneous to the U.S. Semifinals, the top six teams from Group C and Group D will be competing in Kirishi, Russia. Following the two semifinal rounds, the top three teams from the two competitions will move on to the cash prize FINA World League Super Finals in Cosenza, Italy on July 26-30.
