ATHENS, Georgia, July 11. WHILE the Janet Evans Invitational takes place this weekend in Southern California, several of the United States’ top stars will race at the Southern Zone Sectional in Athens, Georgia. The meet is scheduled to run from Thursday through Sunday and will be highlighted by the presence of Club Wolverine and products of the University of Georgia.

Leading the way for Club Wolverine will be Michael Phelps, the eight-time Olympic medalist who appears poised for a sensational showing at Summer Nationals early next month. Phelps is scheduled to contest the 200 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 100 backstroke and will be joined in action by teammates Peter Vanderkaay, Klete Keller, Davis Tarwater and Erik Vendt. Meanwhile, Kaitlin Sandeno will represent Club Wolverine on the female side.

Among other big names expected to compete are Kara Lynn Joyce, Mary DeScenza and Maritza Correia, all former standouts at the University of Georgia. Additionally, Amanda Weir will be present at the meet, along with Cullen Jones. The NCAA champ in the 50 free for North Carolina State, Jones will have the chance to show his status in the 50 free heading into Nationals.
