Jendrick Pops Hot Time in 100 Breast at Zajac International

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 3. RACING north of the border, the United States’ Megan Jendrick uncorked a sizzling time in the 100-meter breaststroke on Friday. Competing at the Bell Grand Prix/Mel Zajac International Swim Meet, the 2000 Olympic gold medalist went 1:07.43 in her pet event. The time was Jendrick’s fastest in six years and bodes well heading into this summer’s U.S. Nationals in Irvine, Calif. Ariana Kukors, Jendrick’s teammate at King Aquatics, won the 400 individual medley in 4:46.23.

Two-time Olympian Andrew Hurd of Toronto lowered a meet record while Scott Dickens of Vancouver began a comeback from injury with victories. In the men’s 800 freestyle, Hurd clocked 8:10.15 to eclipse the previous meet mark of 8:10.70 set by Jan Wolfgarten last year. Ryan Cochrane of Victoria was second in 8:22.32 and C.J. Nuess of the U.S. was third in 8:24.30.

"My training has been on and off of late so I’m pleased with my time tonight," said Hurd. "I had a very good training camp a couple of weeks ago but then I fell ill and have missed some practices lately. So my plan tonight was to get out strong and see how I could hold it."

In the men’s 100 breaststroke, Dickens posted a convincing victory in 1:05.22 with John Hiett of the U.S. second in 1:06.07 and his compatriot Leo Martins third in 1:06.38. Dickens suffered a back injury after the Commonwealth Games in March and was out for six weeks.

"It’s been a slow recovery and it’s been hard watching everyone else train," said Dickens. "I was happy to get back into the water and race. I had a good race tonight and I’m confident I can get back to full strength in time for the Pan Pacific Trials (at the end of July)."

In the men’s 200 freestyle, Canadian record holder Brent Hayden of Vancouver was the winner in 1:49.89 with Hurd second in 1:52.41 and Ray Betuzzi of Calgary third in 1:54.93. In women’s competition, winners included 13-year-old Savannah King of Vernon, B.C., in the women’s 1,500 freestyle, Genevieve Saumur of Montreal in the 50 butterfly, Kelly Stefanyshyn of Vancouver in the 200 backstroke and Erica Morningstar of Calgary in the 200 freestyle.
