US Masters Marks Fall at Illinois Champs

By Mark C. Urban

CHICAGO, Illinois, April 29. THREE USMS national records fell at the Illinois Masters Short Course State Championships this past weekend. Vlad Pyshnenko, 36, a relay gold medalist for the Unified Team (formerly the USSR) at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, blazed a breathtaking 45.32 in the 100-yard freestyle, bettering Ron Karnaugh's old mark for men 35-39 of 46.04 seconds.

A short time later, four extremely fast women representing Team Illinois Masters swam to a USMS national record in the 35+ 400-yard medley relay. Andrea Block, Jennifer Ridge, Liz Dillmann and Nadine Day combined for a time of 4:01.72, destroying the old mark of 4:07.99 by the San Diego Masters.

Eighty year-old Thomas Maine of Saluki Masters in Carbondale broke his own national record for men 80-84 in the 200-yard butterfly, touching in 3:25.55. This marked the third time in 2006 that Maine has lowered the record in the 200 fly. His previous record was 3:29.17.
