Missouri Rolla Men, Fairmont State Women Lead NCAA Division II Academic All-America Teams

PHOENIX, April 13. THE men of the University of Missouri Rolla and the women of Fairmont State University topped the NCAA Division II Team Academic All-America rankings for the Fall 2005-06 term, according to statistics released by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

In all, some 25 Div. II women’s teams and 14 men’s teams met the minimum 2.80 team grade point average requirement. Nine men’s and 20 women’s teams averaged 3.00 or higher.

MEN

Missouri Rolla’s men, coached by Doug Grooms, topped all Div. II men’s teams with a 3.45 gpa. Wheeling Jesuit University, coached by Jeff Stewart, was second at 3.41, followed by Ouachita Baptist University, coached by Jim Dann, at 3.23. Rounding out the top five were Minnesota State University (coached by Nathan Owens), fourth at 3.15 and the University of Indianapolis (coached by Gary Kinkead), fifth at 3.12.

Among the NCAA’s top 10 Div. II teams, three also earned Academic All-America honors: Ouachita Baptist (3.23), Missouri Rolla (3.45), and Delta State (2.82).

WOMEN

The women of Fairmont State, coached by Patrick Snively, scored the highest gpa in Div. II at 3.58. Wingate University, coached by Kurt Sanocki, was second with 3.48. Jeff Stewart’s women’s team at Wheeling Jesuit was third at 3.42, as WJU’s men and women were academically the best combined team in Div. II.

Tied for fourth place at 3.30 were St. Cloud State University, coached by Jeff Hegle and Truman State University, coached by Mark Gole..

Among the NCAA’s top 10 Div. II teams, five also earned Academic All-America honors: Truman State (3.30), University of Nebraska, Omaha (3.10), Ouachita Baptist (3.25), University of South Dakota (3.16), and University of Indianapolis (3.29).
