Nathan Schreiber Named SEC Freshman Diver of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama, April 12. FOR the second consecutive season, an LSU diver was named SEC Men's Freshman Diver of the Year as Nathan Schreiber received the honor in an announcement made Tuesday by the league office.

Schreiber, a native of San Antonio, Texas, reached championship finals in two of three events at the SEC Championships and held the Tigers' second highest marks of the season in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. After claiming a team-high, seventh-place finish in the 1-meter, he placed eighth in the platform competition.

"It is an honor and something we are very proud of as a program," said diving coach Doug Shaffer. "Nathan did a nice job this year with him being a double finalist in his first SEC Championships. That was a difficult challenge in a competitive meet."

Schreiber narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships but did enjoy a solid NCAA Zone B Regional. He reached the 1-meter finals and took 15th in the 3-meter. Schreiber's most impressive dual-meet performance came in LSU's home finale against Texas A&M. He posted a 3-meter score of 343.57 to take runner-up honors.

Schreiber's magnificent season was preceded by another successful freshman campaign in 2005 when Niko Dalman entered the record books. Dalman earned All-America honors a year ago and became the first LSU diver to be named SEC Freshman of the Year.

It is the first time since freshmen awards have been awarded by the conference that a school has produced back-to-back SEC Freshman Divers of the Year.

"What is really exciting is that we have had success with very young and talented divers," said Shaffer. "To know that we are going to have that quality coming back for the next two to three years on the men's side is just wonderful."
