Men’s NCAA Div I. Championships, Finals: Arizona Goes One-Two in the 100 Butterfly

By Phillip Whitten

ATLANTA, Ga. March 24. YOU could feel it. The tide was turning in Arizona’s favor, but the Cats had to make a statement in the 100 fly.
They did.

Sixth qualifier Lyndon Ferns, swimming in lane seven, took the race out hard and turned first in 21.00, while Arizona’s Albert Subirats, the #1 qualifier, languished in fifth.

Not to worry. Ferns held his lead, while Subirats began passing the men ahead of him.

At the wall, it was one-two for Arizona, with Ferns the winner in 45.89, 13-hundredths ahead of his teammate.

After this event, Auburn held a 34-point lead. Could they hold it?
