Men’s NCAA Div I. Championships, Finals: Cullen Jones Sizzles, Takes the 50 Free

ATLANTA, Ga. March 23. AFTER this morning’s prelims, the 50 figured to be anyone’s race, though the favorites were top qualifier Cesar Cielo of Auburn; North Carolina State’s Cullen Jones, who swam a 19.07 recently, just 2-hundredths off the American record; and Stanford’s Benjamin Wildman-Tobriner, last summer’s US national champion for 50 meters.

Arizona’s Simon Burnett got the best start but at the turn it was Wildman-Tobriner who flipped first, with Jones back in the fourth spot. But Jones came off the wall like a rocket and broke out in the lead – a lead he never relinquished.

At the wall it was Jones in 19.18, with Wildman-Tobriner just 4-hundredths behind (19.22). Third went to Burnett (19.32). Cielo, the top qualifier, finished sixth in 19.37.
