North Central High Boys Win Second Straight Indiana Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, March 22. NORTH Central won seven of the 12 events to repeat as champion at the 69th annual IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving Finals in Indianapolis. They won the meet with 295 points. It is North Central’s third boys swimming title overall.

North Central opened the finals with a record-setting performance in the 200-yard medley relay. The Panthers’ Michael Christy, Riley Boulden, Peter Jameson and Sean White combined for a 1:32.95 time, eclipsing the standard of 1:33.05 by Carmel in the 2002 prelims.

Jameson finished the day with four wins. He recorded a dominating performance in the 200 freestyle, winning in 1:37.11. He broke the meet record in Friday’s prelims with a 1:37.02 effort, beating the previous mark of 1:37.36 by Jeff Lee of Munster in 1999. Jameson recorded an individual double with a victory later in the 100 freestyle, 44.93.

Christy, who matched Jameson with four wins, prevailed in the 200 individual medley with a 1:49.13 effort to earn his second state championship in that event. He also won in 2004 as a freshman. Christy added the 100 backstroke title later in the meet with a victorious time of 49.86.

Homestead earned its second runner-up finish in three years after placing second in 2004. Homestead won the 200 freestyle relay, with Adam Lill, Kyle Frebel, Christopher Jones and Andrew Hoffman combining for a 1:26.24 time.

Finals top seed Bryan Chovanec of Munster was victorious in the 50 freestyle in 20.81, edging Greencastle senior Andrew Bretscher (20.83). Crown Point senior Chris Morin edged Highland’s Patrick Augustyn (50.74) and Terre Haute North’s Jonathan Jensen (50.81) to win the 100 butterfly in 50.47. Senior Aaron Koger of Richmond won in the 100 breaststroke with a 56.09 time.
