State Records Fall at Texas 4A and 5A High School Champs

AUSTIN, Texas, March 15. GENERALLY speaking, the 5A teams from Texas swim faster than their 4A counterpart. But, both were equally impressive at the recent state championships.

The winners ended up being Conroe (The Woodlands) for the 5A girls with 262 points and Austin Westlake for the boys with 246 points. On the 4A side, it was Dallas Highland Park with 251 points for the girls and Frisco with 265 points for the boys.

There were new 4A state records in four events. Nick Ward, a senior from Richmond Foster, set a new meet record in the 100 free with his 46.24 effort. Will Rivers, a senior from Elgin, also set a meet record, taking the 500 free with a 4:27.37. The boys from Frisco had a new state record in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:27.61. And finally, Jessica St. John from Alamo Heights tagged a new state record with her 57.38 in the 100 back.

The boys and girls from 5A had a few records too. Most impressive was senior Scott Spann from Austin Westlake with his 54.51 for the 100 breast record. The 500 free also saw another record fall with Colleen Gordon's 4:45.67 for Elkin.
