Truman State Women, Drury Men Take Early Leads at Division II Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, March 8. AFTER the first night of action at the NCAA Division II Championships, being held at the Indiana University Natatorium, the Truman State women and Drury men took leads in the team standings. On the women’s side, Truman State piled up 145 points to move ahead of UC-San Diego (123) and Drury (86). On the men’s side, Drury tallied 149 points to take the lead of Cal State-Bakersfield (86) and the University of Tampa (75).

The Drury men received a major boost in the 200 individual medley when Jakub Jiracek (1:48.31) and Tomas Kuzvard (1:48.38) posted a one-two finish. Drury also received a one-two performance in the 1,000 freestyle as Ryan Norrie (9:06.68) and Michael Lewandowski (9:12.79) bested the competition.

Tampa’s Cole Tedhams claimed a decisive victory in the 50 freestyle as his time of 19.77 was the only sub-20 clocking in the field. North Dakota’s Rodrigo Ferreira was second in 20.30 and also helped his squad to gold in the 200 medley relay. Ferreira was joined by Jeff Schneider, Jared Peters and Eric Knight for a time of 1:31.09, quicker than Tampa’s effort of 1:31.86.

In the women’s competition, Truman notched its only triumph of the night in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Emily Greenwood, Brigit Brunsman, Laura Harp and Whitney Jensen managed a clocking of 1:44.36. Truman’s Lija Kaleps-Clark was second in the 200 I.M., behind only Tampa’s Chelsea Hastings (2:03.52).

In the 1,000 freestyle, West Chester’s Tammy Leane was first to the wall, thanks to a swim of 10:00.18. That effort was easily enough to hold off UC-San Diego’s Sophie Levy (10:08.15). Meanwhile, Drury’s Mariana De Oliveira was first in the 50 free in 23.34.
