Four Records Set at Tennessee State Champs

NASHVILLE, Tennessee, March 7. HARPETH Hall (women) and Brentwood High School (men) each successfully defended their titles at the 2006 Tennessee High School State Championships contested in the Tracy Caulkins Natatorium. The Baylor School claimed the combined team award.

Highlighting the results were four new Tennessee state records. Webb School senior Meredith Ayres swam to a 2:01.59 in the 200-yard individual medley, easily breaking the record set one year ago by Sarah McCall (2:02.18). Ayres also claimed a state championship in the 500 freestyle (4:53.11) on her way to being named Female Swimmer of the Year.

Bearden High School Senior Annie Broome set a new state record in the 100 butterfly, erasing Margo McCawley's 55.08 set in 2004. Broome, runner-up to McCawley one year ago, twice bested the record, swimming to a 54.91 in prelims and then a 54.41 in finals. Rounding out the records were two relays from the Baylor School. Swimmers Alex Prebul, Elle St. Charles, Kacey Weddle and Stephanie Napier swam to new state records in both the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.92) and 400 freestyle relay (3:30.45). The previous state records of 1:37.07 and 3:31.06 were both set in 2005.

Napier just missed her two state records from last year, but was still crowned champion in the 50 freestyle (22.61) and 100 freestyle (50.41). Franklin High Senior Sarah Peterson repeated as state champion in the 200 freestyle (1:49.38) and also won the 100 backstroke (55.71). Peterson also led off Franklin High's state champion 200 medley relay (1:47.18). Farragut Junior Jessica Hill was the only female underclassman to win an individual title, taking the 100 breaststroke (1:04.18).

For the men, Brentwood Academy Sophomore Jackson Wilcox was named Male Swimmer of the Year after taking state titles in the 200 freestyle (1:40.33) and 500 freestyle (4:30.42). Father Ryan Senior Ciro Sauaia won the 50 free (20.93) and 100 free (45.96). Brentwood High School Senior Alan Maher won his third state title in the 100 backstroke (50.50) while first-time winners included Father Ryan Junior Dan Forstyle in the 100 breaststroke (58.44), Brentwood High Sophomore Jordan Slaughter in the 100 butterfly (49.77) and Brentwood High Junior Andrew Mitchell in the 200 individual medley (1:49.84).

Maher, Mitchell, and Slaughter were also members of Brentwood High's state champion relays in the 200 medley relay (1:35.38) and 400 freestyle relay (3:09.15). Christian Brothers took the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.16).
