TOKYO, February 27. RECORDS fell like leaves in an autumn wind storm at the Japanese Short Course National Championships held in Tokyo this weekend. In all, some 10 national marks were blown away.

Hidemasa Sano accounted for two of the marks. After recording a national record (NR) 4:05.46 in the 400 IM on Friday, Sano blazed a 1:56.05 for the 200 IM on Sunday.

Daisuke Hosokawa was also a two-time record-breaker, clocking 48.60 for the 100m freestyle after going a NR 1:45.48 in the 200 free. Ryuichi Shibata and Maiko Fujino also set new Japanese marks. Shibata, a senior at Nihon University, clocked 1:52.28 for the men’s 200m fly while Fujino touched in 4:32.46 for the women’s 400m IM title.

Veteran Mai Nakamura set a NR in the women’s 100m backstroke but did not win her race. Nakamura failed to qualify for the A final, but she swam a record 58.14 in winning consols.

Ai Shibata, the Athens gold medalist in the women’s 800m freestyle, cruised to victory in that event in 8:25, but was out-touched by Romania’s Camelia Potec in the 400 meters, 4:05.99 to 4:06.01.
