Yestrau Takes 100 Back Title at Speedo Western Canadian Championships

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, February 18. LANDICE Yestrau of Winnipeg, who’ll compete next month at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, won the gold medal Friday in the women’s 100-meter backstroke at the 2006 Speedo Western Canadian Swimming Championships. Yestrau, 18, clocked 1:01.70 with her clubmate Julian Toogood second in 1:02.53 and Caroline Clapham of Victoria third in 1:03.55.

In the women’s 200 individual medley, Melanie Dodds denied Jillian Tyler of Calgary a third gold medal by winning in 2:16.19 while Tyler, a double winner Thursday, was second in 2:16.64. In men’s open competition winners included: Chad Murray of Calgary in the 200 IM and Ray Betuzzi of Calgary in the 400 freestyle.

400 freestyle: 1. Ray Betuzzi, Calgary, 3:50.60; 2. Jarrod Ballem, Calgary, 3:53.39; 3. Kier Maitland, Edmonton, 3:57.77.

Women’s Results

100 backstroke: 1. Landice Yestrau, Winnipeg, 1:01.70; 2. Julian Toogood, Winnipeg, 1:02.53; 3. Caroline Clapham, Victoria, 1:03.55.
200 individual medley: 1. Melanie Dodds, Langley, B.C., 2:16.19; 2. Jillian Tyler, Calgary, 2:16.64; 3. Erica Morningstar, Calgary, 2:16.79.
