Tyler Wins Two at Speedo Western Canadian Championships

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, February 17. JILLIAN Tyler of Calgary picked up where she left off last year with two gold medals Thursday to open the 2006 Speedo Western Canadian Swimming Championships at the Pan Am Pool. Tyler, a quadruple champion last year in the youth category, made a spectacular debut at the open level with victories in the 50-meter breaststroke (32.85) and 50 butterfly (28.29). Other winners in women’s open competition were Commonwealth Games team member Yandice Lestrau of Winnipeg in the 50 backstroke (29.09) and Lauren Lavigna of Vancouver in the 800 freestyle (8:50.09).

In the men’s open competition, winners were Jake Tapp in the 50 backstroke (26.13), Braeden Taylor of Winnipeg and Ryan Scheurman of Edmonton who tied for top spot in the 50 breaststroke (30.38), Ray Betuzzi in the 50 butterfly (25.49) and Jarrod Ballem in the 1,500 freestyle (15:23.22).

50 breaststroke: 1. (tie) Braeden Taylor, Winnipeg and Ryan Scheuerman, Edmonton, 30.38; 3. Adam Szoo, Calgary, 30.44.

50 butterfly: 1. Ray Betuzzi, Calgary, 25.49; 2. Brent Hankewich, Saskatoon, 25.72; 3. Jake Tapp, Langley, B.C., 25.84.

1,500 freestyle: 1. Jarrod Ballem, Calgary, 15:23.22; 2. Kier Maitland, Edmonton, 15:28.24; 3. Doug Rawlick, Edmonton, 15:45.09.

Women's Results

50 backstroke: 1. Yandice Lestrau, Winnipeg, 29.09; 2. Caroline Clapham, Victoria, 29.54; 3. Katie Kotlowski, Langley, B.C., 30.10.

50 breaststroke: 1. Jillian Tyler, Calgary, 32.85; 2. Serena McGibbon, West Vancouver, 33.38; 3. Emma Spooner, Calgary, 33.40.

50 butterfly: 1. Jillian Tyler, Calgary, 28.29; 2. Landice Yestrau, Winnipeg, 28.74; 3. Caroline Clapham, Victoria, 28.81.

800 freestyle: 1. Lauren Lavigna, Vancouver, 8:50.09; 2. Shannon Garrett, New Westminster, B.C., 8:51.35; 3. Tara Ivanitz, Vernon, B.C., 8:57.04.
