Minnesota Holds Narrow Edge Over Michigan at Big Ten Women’s Champs

COLUMBUS, Ohio, February 16. AFTER two days of the Big Ten Conference Women’s Championships at Ohio State University, the University of Minnesota holds a seven-point lead over Michigan in the team standings. The Golden Gophers have piled up 200 points to the 193 points of the Wolverines. Indiana sits third with 169 points and Penn State is fourth with 168 points.

The University of Michigan started the night off with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay. The Wolverines’ grouping of Kaitlyn Brady, Hannah Smith, Abby Seskevics and Lindsey Smith registered a time of 1:30.02, good for a meet record. Michigan was followed by Wisconsin (1:30.27) and Minnesota (1:31.18).

Brady and Lindsey Smith went back to work later in the night and posted a one-three finish in the 50 freestyle. Brady touched the wall in 22.37 while Smith was timed in 22.94. Taking second place was Minnesota’s Stacy Busack with a mark of 22.57.

In the 500 freestyle, Minnesota nailed down the first and third places, thanks to the efforts of Yuen Kobayashi and Chris Jennings. Kobayashi, a freshman, won the race in 4:43.00, nearly two seconds quicker than the 4:44.82 of Penn State’s Erin Morris. Jennings checked in with a swim of 4:45.57.

Michigan’s Justine Mueller captured gold in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:59.60, the only effort under the two-minute barrier. Minnesota’s Jenny Shaughnessy was second (2:00.60) and Penn State’s Kelly Nelson placed third in 2:00.78.
