Mariners Split in Hoboken at Last Dual Meet of the Season

HOBOKEN, NJ. February 6. SEVERAL pool records were set at the DeBaun Aquatic Center on Saturday, Feb. 4, as the Mariners and Ducks split at Kings Points' last dual meet of the season.

The Mariner women lost 102-81, while the men took home another win 126-65 against the Ducks.

On the men's side, the Mariners broke seven pool records. The men set the score in the 400-yard medley relay swum by Scott Pearson, Jay Carpenter, Matthew Ellison and anchored by William Ansell (3:37.96); the 1000-, 200-, 100-, and 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay, in an exhibition swim by Victor Policarpio, David Scarberry, Hugh Chambrovich and David Ramseur.

David Scarberry, Jay Carpenter and Bryan Vagts were double-event winners for the men. Scarberry, a freshman from Fairborn, OH, set two of the seven records with his first place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:21.84) and 200-yard butterfly (2:05.94). Also setting two of the DeBaun Aquatic Center records, Carpenter, a sophomore from Clearwater, FL, finished first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. Dropping seconds of his season's best in the events with times of 21:59 and 48.32 respectively.

Vagts, a junior also dropped seconds off his first place times in both the 200-yard IM and 500-yard freestyle events. Vagts, beating out fellow Mariner Scott Murphy in the 200 IM, dropped two seconds off his season's best with a time of 2:09.59. In the 500, the Crofton, MD, local dropped one second off his season's best with a time of 5:17.09. The Mariner men swept the top-three spots in the event, with sophomore Craig Gary and junior Benjamin Christian following Vagts to the pool edge.

West Lafayette, IN, native, Andrew Dunlevy, also set a pool record, with his first place swim in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.36).

On the women's side, senior Kimberly Sercel and Sophomore Robyn Jimenez were the two first place finishers for the Mariners.

In the 200-yard backstroke, Sercel dropped two seconds off her season's best with her first place swim of 2:18.18. Sercel swam .56 seconds ahead of Stevens' Emily Woo for the win. Woo, who set a pool record for Stevens Tech, took home the Skyline Swimmer of the Meet award, at the Skyline Invitational earlier this season.

Jimenez also dropped time off her winning swim in the 200-yard breaststroke, with a time of 2:36.80, swimming 14.08 seconds ahead of Stevens' Jessica Pruzinsky.

At the meet, senior Kelsey Newell and junior Elizabeth Mock also dropped seconds of their season's best times in their respective events.

With a time of 2:37.07, Newell, from Honolulu, HI, dropped nine seconds off her season's best swim in the 200-yard freestyle.

Mock finished up behind Woo in the 200-yard breaststroke, dropping three seconds off her season's best with 2:45.75.

The last time they met at the Skyline Invitational, the Mariner women outscored the Ducks by 37 points to take home first place and the men swam 172 points ahead. The Ducks finished second on both the men's and the women's sides.

With the split, the Mariner men finish their season 7-2 on dual meets, while the women finish up with a record of 7-3. Stevens finishes the contest 4-7-1 on the women's side and 5-7 on the men's side.

Next up, the Mariners will travel to Rutgers University on Feb. 17-19 for the annual Metropolitan Championships.

At METS, swimmers will hope to qualify for the NCAA Championships held at the University of Minnesota on March 9-11(women) and March 16-18(men).
