Wyoming Diving Excels at Air Force while Swimming and Diving Falls to BYU

Laramie, Wyo. January 29. THE University of Wyoming men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell to BYU in Mountain West Conference dual action, while the divers had a strong finish at the Air Force Diving Invite, Saturday afternoon.

The Cowboys won five of 13 events but lost to BYU by a final score of 147-95. Leading the way for the Cowboys was Henry Holmberg and John Lynch. Holmberg won both distance freestyle events by swimming to a time of 9:45.47 in the 1000 and 4:44.60 in the 500. Lynch’s scores at the Air Force Diving Invite were good for a first place dual finish in both 1 and 3-meter action. Last night he dove to a score of 315.15 in 3-meter and today he recorded a score of 287.70 in 1-meter. The other first place finish came in the 400 IM as Sam King swam to a first place time of 4:12.67.

The Cowgirls won just two events on the day, as they fell to the Cougars 158-85. Aimee Stinson claimed both first place finishes in the distance freestyle events. She swam to a time of 10:43.64 in the 1000 freestyle and 5:12.49 in the 500 freestyle.

“We didn’t swim as well as we could have, but it wasn’t due to a lack of effort,” said UW swimming and diving coach Tom Johnson. “I think the kids were a little tired from such an emotional dual last night against Utah. However, BYU deserves a lot of credit. They are two tough teams and swam very well today.”

The divers had a strong finish at the Air Force Diving Invite, which was highlighted by Ginni van Katwijk and Emily Keefer claiming the top-two spots in the platform competition. Van Katwijk won the event with a score of 219.95 and Keefer placed second with a score of 192.90. In men’s platform action, Kevin Bretting placed fourth (235.60), John Lynch placed fifth (230.55) and Tyler Miller placed sixth (227.35). In 1-meter diving action, van Katwijk led the Cowgirls with a fifth place score of 250.15 and Lynch led the Cowboys with a third place score of 287.70.

On a side note Utah’s men were able to claim the 1-meter diving event today, that carried over from last night’s meet, to beat the Pokes in the dual. The men fell by a final score of 126-117.

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will return to action next Saturday to host MWC rival Air Force in their final dual of the season. The dual is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Corbett Pool.
