Stanford Women Take Down Arizona 137-106

STANFORD, Calif. January 20. STANFORD (11-0, 2-0 Pac-10) continued its impressive season with a 137-106 victory over previously fellow unbeaten and No. 5 Arizona (7-1, 4-1 Pac-10) on Friday at the Avery Aquatic Center. Brooke Bishop led the Cardinal effort by winning a pair of individual events in the 50 free and 200 back, recording the only NCAA "A" performance of the meet in the latter with a time of 1:56.11 that was just shy of a 12-year pool record held by current Stanford head coach Lea Maurer (formerly Lea Loveless).

The Wildcats posted several first-place finishes beginning with the 400-medley relay of senior Jenna Gresdal, senior Erin Sieper, junior Whitney Myers and sophomore Lacey Nymeyer, who finished the race with a time of 3:40.54. Nymeyer captured a pair of individual events for the Wildcats as she won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:48.81 and the 500 freestyle as well (4:50.61). Myers tallied another win for Arizona in the 200 IM, defeating Stanford’s Dana Kirk with a time of 2:00.62, while later placing second in the 200 butterfly (2:00.74), followed by senior Lisa Pursley who finished fourth in the race (2:04.76). Sieper also posted an individual win in the 200 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:15.28, while freshman Jessica Embick and sophomore Jacquelyn Craft finished third and fourth. Gresdal finished second in the 50 freestyle (23.34), while freshman Lindsey Kelly finished third with a time of 23.34. Sophomore Courtney Cashion finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 51.10 and Kelly finished fourth (52.05). Gresdal took the third-place position in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.5. Ending the swimming events for the women was the 400 free relay team of Cashion, freshman Anna Turner, Kelly and freshman Taylor Baughman, who finished second with a time of 3:25.60.
