No. 19 Notre Dame defeats Evansville 163-73 to up dual-meet record to 5-1

SOUTH BEND, Indiana. January 13. MEMBERS of the 19th-ranked Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team competed in two locations on Friday evening. The majority of the Fighting Irish squad defeated the University of Evansville in dual-meet action, 163-73, in the Wyttenbach Pool in Evansville, Ind. Notre Dame also sent nine student-athletes to the 24th Annual Dallas Morning News Meet in the Perkins Natatorium in Dallas, Texas. The Irish are currently fifth out of the six-team field heading into the second and final day of competition at the prestigious event.

The Fighting Irish, who improved to 5-1 in dual-meet action this season, dominated the Purple Aces by winning nine of 13 events en route to the victory. Three members of the squad collected multiple wins on the evening. Senior Patrick Davis captured wins in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:34.50) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.50), while junior Brian Freeman won the 200-free (1:43.46) and the 200-backstroke (1:54.57). Sophomore diver Sam Stoner was victorious in both the one-meter (281.65) and three-meter competitions (312.40).

Junior Tim Kegelman posted the top Irish finish during day one of the Dallas Morning News Classic as he swam a tie for second in the 100-yard butterfly. The Irish scored 113.5 points on the day and are 55 points off the pace of No. 7 Florida (168.5 pts.). The 16th-ranked Northwestern Wildcats are second (162) followed by the host school SMU (152) and No. 14 Florida State (128). Washington rounds out the field in sixth-place with 104 points.

Each of the six teams in the 24th Annual Dallas Morning News Classic are allowed to bring eight swimmers and one diver.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS CLASSIC DAY ONE RECAP:

400-Yard Medley Relay: The Irish team consisting of Doug Bauman, Tim Randolph, Tim Kegelman and Louis Cavadini placed sixth in a time of 3:25.06. Northwestern’s quintet took the title in 3:14.85

400-Yard IM: Notre Dame’s Jamie Lutkus clocked a fourth-place finish in 4:03.55, while Jay Vanden Berg was 10th in 4:03.57 for the Irish. Florida’s Bradley Ally won with a time of 3:51.26.

200-Yard Freestyle: Ted Brown placed third as he touched the wall in 1:40.89 and his Irish teammate Nick Fanslau was 12th in 1:46.10. Florida’s Ryan Lochte won the event in a meet and pool-record time of 1:35.57.

50-Yard Freestyle: Notre Dame’s Louis Cavadini posted a time of 21.35, which was good for sixth. Tim Randolph swam in a time of 21.58 to place 11th for the Irish. Luka Vrtovec from SMU won in a time of 20.70.

One-Meter Diving: Michael Bulfin is the lone diver for the Irish in the meet and he placed fourth with a final point total of 296.45.

100-Yard Butterfly: Tim Kegelman placed in a tie for second for the Irish with a time of 49.84. His teammate Ted Brown was 11th after swimming a time of 51.64. Northwestern’s Kyle Bubolz was the winner after touching the wall in 47.80.

100-Yard Backstroke: Doug Bauman was fifth (52.31) and Jamie Lutkus was 12th (54.83) for the Fighting Irish, Matt Grevers of Northwestern won in a time of 47.16.

100-Yard Breaststroke: Tim Randolph placed sixth for the Irish with a time of 57.48 and his teammate Tim Kegelman was ninth in 58.08. Winning the event was Mik Alexandrov of Northwestern.

800-Yard Freestyle Relay: In the final event of the evening, the Fighting Irish squad of Ted Brown, Nick Fanslau, Jay Vanden Berg and Louis Cavadini finished fifth with a time of 6:51.69. Florida’s four-man team captured the race in a meet and pool-record time of 6:32.63.

The final day of the Dallas Morning News Classic will begin tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. (CT). The evening’s action will consist of the 200-yard medley relay, 500-yard free, 200-yard breast, 200-yard back, three-meter diving, 100-yard free, 200-yard fly, 200-yard IM and the 200-yard free relay. The Fighting Irish will return to the pool as a complete squad on Friday, Jan. 20 as they face Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. at 6:00 p.m. (CT). Notre Dame returns home with a visit from Cleveland State on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2:00 p.m. (ET) in the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
