PRESS RELEASE: ASU Women’s Swimming Defeats Oregon State in PAC-10 Meet; Men’s swimming falls to Purdue

TEMPE, Arizona, January 9. ARIZONA State University swimming and diving competed for the second day in a row with the men finishing a two-day meet against Purdue and the women competing against Pac-10 opponent Oregon State. The ASU women's team notched its first Pac-10 win this season against Oregon State 158-47. The men were unable to overcome Purdue with the Boilermakers winning 182-165.

On the women's side, the Sun Devils captured first place in every event. Sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas), senior Kathryn Hennessy (Kansas City, Mo.) and freshman Amy Konowalik (Derby, England) each took home titles in two events. Andrew won the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly. Hennessy captured first place in the 100-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Konowalik touched the wall first in the 400-yard IM and the 200-yard breaststroke. Andrew also swam the third leg of the 200-yard medley relay team the won first place.

For the men, sophomore Lucas Azevedo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) recorded the team's fastest time this season in the 1,000-yard freestyle. His time of 9:10.05 surpasses his previous season-best, which put him in seventh place on the all-time ASU list in the event. Sophomore C.J. Nuess (Medical Lake, Wash.) finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle and recorded his fastest time of the season in the event with a time of 9:16.42 and won the 400-yard IM. Junior Richie Crowder (Los Gatos, Calif.) and freshman Sean Boyle (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) won the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle events, respectively.

Next up, men's swimming will compete against Minnesota on Saturday, Jan. 14 at noon MST at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
