Luo Collapses During Weight Training Session

BEIJING, China, December 29. LUO Xuejuan, the reigning Olympic champion in the 100-meter breaststroke, collapsed during a weight-training session on Christmas Eve, according to an article by Craig Lord of the London Times. According to the story, it is, at minimum, the fourth time Luo has collapsed in the past 18 months, either during training or at the completion of a race.

En route to last year’s World Championships in Montreal, Luo had her training interrupted on a handful of occasions. She also endured an ankle injury that hindered her efforts. At the World Champs, Luo finished in fourth place in the 100 breast and seventh in the 50 breast. She was the world champ in the 100 breast at the 2001 and 2003 World Championships. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Luo claimed gold in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.64, good for an Olympic record.

"The team doctor told me there was no big problem with Luo Xuejuan,” said Zhang Yadong, Luo’s coach. “But I could not be at ease. I was afraid something might happen."
