European Short Course Champs Set to Begin -- December 7, 2005
TRIESTE, Italy, December 7. RUNNING from Thursday through Sunday, the European Short Course Championships will take place in Trieste, Italy. The competition is one of the year’s final major events and will feature an impressive field that includes several athletes crowned as world champions last summer in Montreal.
Fresh off a European record in the 400-meter freestyle, France’s Laure Manaudou is expected to challenge the world record in the event. Manaudou won gold in the 400 free in Montreal and was a triple-event medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Meanwhile, Italy’s Filippo Magnini will look for sprint-freestyle success. He won a world title in the 100 free last summer, edging South Africa’s Roland Schoeman at the wall.
Other world champions scheduled to compete are Germany’s Mark Warnecke (50 breaststroke), Poland’s Pawel Korzeniowski (200 butterfly) and Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh (400 individual medley). Cseh was recently named European Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World Magazine. Austria’s Markus Rogan will look to defend his European crown in the 200 backstroke.
