Florida Posts Sweep of Florida State

GAINESVILLE, Florida, November 23. HEADING into the Thanksgiving holiday, the University of Florida collected a pair of victories over Florida State on Tuesday. The Gator men, ranked seventh in the country, earned a 126-115 win over the Seminoles while the women, rated fourth, collected a 138-103 triumph. Florida was coming off a venture over the weekend to the Purdue Invitational.

Ryan Lochte carried the Gators (5-2) on the men’s side, as the Athens Olympian posted first-place finishes in the 200 butterfly (1:44.13) and 200 backstroke (1:44.73). Lochte also teamed with Bradley Ally, Nick Borreca and Darian Townsend for a win in the 200 medley relay (1:29.70). Townsend also prevailed in the 200 free with a solid time of 1:36.93. Ally took top honors in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 1:48.14.

Tobias Work doubled for the Gators in the 500 and 1,000 freestyles, clocking in at 4:24.90 and 9:05.77, and Jonathan Wilcox swept the one- and three-meter diving events. For Florida State, Alex Kennon topped the field in the 50 free (20.54) and Joel Roycik touched the wall first in the 100 free (44.84). Billy Jamerson claimed victory in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.53).

In the women’s meet, Natalie Pike and Vipa Bernhardt delivered strong performances. Pike was the winner of the 200 free in 1:47.89 and Bernhardt defeated the field in the 200 I.M. with a swim of 2:03.15. Amanda Hartley’s 2:17.02 effort was swift enough to win the 200 breast and Caroline Burckle was the fastest finisher in the 500 free (4:50.20).

Carrie Ellis won the 50 free (23.05) and 100 free (49.93) for the Seminoles, who also received a triumph from Romy Altmann in the 200 backstroke (2:00.44).
