Jana Henke Follows Stockbauer by Announcing Retirement

POTSDAM, Germany, October 12. THE retirement bug has evidently hit Germany, as Jana Henke has announced her decision to leave the competitive ranks. Henke’s decision follows the retirement of Hannah Stockbauer, a five-time world champion in the distance-freestyle events. While Stockbauer is only a 23-year-old, Henke is 32.

Henke earned a pair of bronze medals at the World Championships during her career, taking third in the 800 freestyle in 1991 and third in the 1,500 free in 2003. Henke also earned a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Henke finished seventh in the 800 free with a time of 8:33.95. Her best in the event is 8:23.83.

"I didn’t want to torment myself any longer. I had no more desire,” Henke said. “There must be an end. It became time to take my life into my own hands.”
