Fourth-Grader Completes Swim from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco Shoreline

SAN FRANCISCO, California, October 12. NEGOTIATING cold and choppy water, Johnny Wilson completed the swim from Alcatraz Island to the San Francisco shoreline on Monday. A 9-year-old who is in the fourth grade, Wilson’s swim raised $30,000 to aid victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in the Gulf Coast.

Wilson moved through the 53-degree water and was met by cheering classmates at the finish. He completed the 1.4-mile swim in just under two hours. Alcatraz Prison, which closed in 1963, is considered one of the premier holding facilities in American history. It is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in California.
