University of New Hampshire Programs Support Fight Against Mitochondrial Disease

BOSTON, Massachusetts, September 26. THE University of New Hampshire swimming programs participated in the first annual Family Fun Walk for the Mitochondrial Disease Action Committee on Saturday. The walk took place in nearby Boston along the Charles River to benefit and create awareness for Mitochondrial Disease.

Mitochondrial disease is a genetic, chronic and progressively debilitating disease that affects its victims at the cell level and manifests itself in a variety of ways. The Honorary Walk Marshall was Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, and Assistant Red Sox Assistant Coach Dick Berardino was on hand with his World Series ring and signed autographs.

UNH Swim team members manned water stations, worked the registration table, inflated balloons for the kids and helped to facilitate the walk that was in part organized by former UNH swimmer Kristin (Mallery) Murray (Class of 1992), whose son Jack was recently diagnosed with this rare disease. The walk and auction raised more than $100,000 for the cause and more than 500 participants took part in the event.
