Louisville Opens Ralph R. Wright Natatorium

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, September 21. THE University of Louisville opened the Ralph R. Wright Natatorium yesterday with a 4:30 ribbon-cutting ceremony. The facility features an eight-lane, 50-meter pool and five diving boards – two springboard (1-meter and 3-meter) and three towers (5-meter, 7.5 meter, 10-meter). The 41,000-square foot complex can seat up to 800 spectators and includes a state-of-the-art timing system.

The project cost $11,675,000 and the facility, named after Louisville’s first coach, will be open to students at the university. Ralph Wright developed the program during the 1948-49 school year and was one of the elite swimmers in the world during his competitive days. Wright was also one of the founders of the American Swim Coaches Association.

Last year, the Louisville women set 17 school records and finished fourth in Conference USA. Meanwhile, the men’s team placed second at the Conference USA Championships and totaled 15 school standards. The men also placed 27th at the NCAA Championships, marking the first time the program dented the top-30.
