Ziegler Wins 1,650 Free as Tom Dolan Invitational Opens

FAIRFAX, Virginia, December 9. HEADING into the Tom Dolan Invitational at George Mason University, one of the storylines was Kate Ziegler’s pursuit of Janet Evans’ American records in the 500 and 1,650-yard freestyles. After the first night of action, one of Evans’ long-standing records has survived Ziegler’s assault.

Covering the 1,650 free in 15:47.69, Ziegler (The Fish) missed Evans’ 1990 standard of 15:39.14 by a good margin. Still, Ziegler won her race by nearly a minute. The reigning world champion in the 800 and 1,500-meter freestyles, Ziegler still has a shot at Evans’ 500 free record, which has stood at 4:34.39 since the 1990 campaign. Ziegler owns a personal-best time of 4:36.51 in the 500 free.
