Ziegler Expected to Race at National Catholic Championships in Suburban Philadelphia

VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania, January 24. ONE year after dazzling at the National Catholic Championships at Villanova University, Kate Ziegler is looking for a sensational encore. The reigning world champion in the 800 and 1,500 freestyles, Ziegler is expected to be in suburban Philadelphia this weekend for this year’s version of the National Catholics. Ziegler is a senior at Bishop O’Connell High, located in Arlington, Virginia.

Last year, Ziegler blazed to victories in the 200 and 500 freestyles in the meet at Villanova University, which served as a precursor to a spectacular year. The highlight performances, of course, arrived in Montreal, where Ziegler’s training under Ray Benecki with The Fish was rewarded with a pair of world titles.

Although it would be a major achievement considering the fact that Ziegler is in training, there’s a chance that the teenage sensation could challenge the national scholastic record in the 500 freestyle this weekend. The mark is held at 4:37.30 by the legendary Janet Evans. Last year, Ziegler set a private-school record with a swim of 4:37.67. Evans also holds the American record in the event at 4:34.39.

Preliminary action for National Catholics is scheduled for Saturday with the championship and consolation finals slated for Sunday, beginning at noon (EST).
