York of PA Sweeps Frostburg State To Kick Off Season

YORK, Pennsylvania, October 6. YORK College of PA swept Frostburg State in a home-opening contest at the York College Natatorium last night. The men took home a 148-90 win, while the women managed a 138-112 triumph.

The York College men’s swim team got off to a 1-0 start to the new season as they defeated conference foe Frostburg 148-90 Saturday afternoon in the York College Natatorium.

Spartan veteran standouts Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del. / Caravel Academy), Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Ca. / Rio Mesa), Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del. / William Penn), and Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridley) kicked off the meet by combining for a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.48. The all-freshmen team of Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J. / Pompton Lakes), Cameron Byrne (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East), Matt Terrell (Pottstown, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts), and Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa. / Coatesville) showed off their talent by finishing a close second with a time of 1:41.95.

Freshman distance swimmer Wynne Kirchner (Elkridge, Md. / Howard) welcomed himself to the lineup in winning fashion. His 11:15.68 paced the field in the 1000 yard freestyle. Sophomore David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md. / James Hubert Blake) complimented Kirchner’s performance with a second place finish of 11:26.31.

Terrell’s first individual action came in the 200 yard freestyle event. He bested Bonner’s second place 1:56.16 by touching the wall in 1:52.22.

The Green and White saw first place finishes in the 50 yard backstroke and 50 yard breaststroke events. Sophomore Martin Schmidt (Pilesgrove, N.J. / Woodstown) topped the field in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 29.07. Walthall, the reigning CAC Rookie of the Year, took the 50 yard breaststroke with a 27.71.

The Spartans earned a 1-2 finish in the 100 yard butterfly as Latchford teamed with Stoll to post respective times of 55.76 and 58.71.

Hughes sprinted to a 22.37 in the 50 yard freestyle, posting first place points on the Green and White side of the scoreboard.

The 100 yard freestyle saw an all-freshmen top three for York. Lucash, Terrell, and Stoll completed the trifecta with times of 50.59, 51.28, and 51,96 respectively.

Hughes continued his strong meet by taking first place in the 100 yard backstroke race after touching the wall in 59.21.

Freshman Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa. / Strath Haven) got his first taste of collegiate success after placing second in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.35.

Following the strong start, Coach Erin Kurtz elected to compete in the final four events in exhibition form. Those events included the 500 yard freestyle, 50 yard butterfly, and 200 yard individual medley. Walthall posted a 5:10.27, while freshman Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) recorded a 5:23.44 in the 500 yard freestyle. Latchford and Bonner finished the 50 yard butterfly with 24.69 and 24.96 times, respectively. Stoll completed the four-stroke individual medley in 2:08.47.

The York College women’s swim team kicked off the 2013-2014 season with a 138-112 victory of the Frostburg State University Bobcats Saturday afternoon in the York College Natatorium. The meet was part of York’s Fall Fest and Alumni Weekend.

The Green and White opened the season strong as the 200 yard relay team of senior Megan Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J. / Colts Neck), junior Lindsey Buglino (Wharton, N.J. / Jefferson), freshman Maria Allera (Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake), and junior Courtney Dacheux (Dover, Pa. / Dover) captured a first place finish culminating for a time of 2:01.29.

The individual portion of the meet brought an abundance of success for the Spartans. Senior Jenny Hinkle (Olney, Md. / Sherwood) earned her first top finish of the season by completing the 40 lap, 1000 yard freestyle in 11:48.48. Finishing behind Hinkle was fellow Spartan Madison Tonkay (Landisville, Pa. / Hempfield), who posted a time of 12:12.09.

Junior Megan Shannon (Hanover, Pa. / South Western) returned to the water with a first place performance. Her 2:10.54 chalked nine points on the Green and White leger. Hinkle followed Shannon with a second place 2:13.03.

Murphy’s first individual event of the new campaign matched her relay performance. She touched the in 31.89, capturing first place points in the 50 yard backstroke. Freshman Samantha Wingate (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridley) complimented Murphy’s first place with a second place 33.90 in her first collegiate action.

Dacheux got off to a strong start by recording a 34.45 in the 50 yard breaststroke. Following Dacheux’s first place pace, senior Kelsie Pike (Newark, Del. / St. Mark’s) finished second finishing her two laps in 35.00.

Buglino picked up where she left off last season, putting forth another strong performance in the 100 yard butterfly event with a time of 1:03.31.

Murphy would pick up another first place finish in the 50 yard freestyle race sprinting to a 27.76 finish.

Buglino, Dacheux, and Shannon combined to nab the top three places in the 100 yard freestyle. Buglino’s 57.93 set the pace. Dacheux followed with a 58.32 before Shannon touched in 29.33.

Junior Sammy Greenwald (Germantown, Md. / Northwest) took the water in the 100 yard backstroke. Her 1:09.37 would pace the field. Wingate would chalk up her second runner-up finish with a time of 1:13.65.

Pike would go on be the top Spartan in the 100 yard breaststroke as she posted a time of 1:19.38. Senior Danielle Marino (Wind Gap, Pa. / Nazareth) would finish close behind pike with her 1:19.60 performance.

The strong all-around start from the Spartans provided the opportunity to swim exhibition in the last four events of the day. Those events were highlighted by Buglino’s posting a 5:32.34 and freshman Ashley McManus’s (Malvern, Pa. / Great Valley) 5:45.96 in the 500 yard freestyle. Junior Meg Walker (New Castle, Del. / Pencader Charter) posted a 31.69 in the 50 yard butterfly race. Hinkle and Tonkay teamed up for another strong collective performance posting respective times of 2:30.79 and 2:31.66 in the 200 yard individual medley.

The Frostburg State swimming teams fell to York (Pa.) in their season-opening meets, Saturday.

The Bobcat women fell 138-112 despite coming off the block strong with five wins.

Junior Kaitlyn Donch led the women’s team as she earned a pair of first-place finishes. Donch captured victories in the100-yard breaststroke (1:17.40) and the 200-yard IM (2:36.12).

Junior Jaclyn Franzak joined her teammate for a first-place win in the 50-yard butterfly finishing in just 30.89. Franzak then followed with two more second-place times in the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.22) and the 200-yard IM (2:52.44).

Junior Sarah King added to the list as she grabbed first place in the 500-yard freestyle.

The fight for first didn’t stop after individual events as Bobcats occupied first and second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with times of 1:57.93 and 2:27.74.

On the men’s side, the Spartans downed FSU 148-90.

Sophomore Jonathan Shepard started off the season’s opening meet with a win for the Bobcats in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.24) followed by a second-place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke in just 29.94.

Senior Vincent Faiella made it to the wall first with a time of 6:33.84 in the 500-yard freestyle. Faiella then swam the anchor leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:52.42).Senior Drake Dobish, junior Jeff Page, and junior Brian Sentz teamed with Faiella to once again snag a first-place finish from the Spartans.

Page earned runner-up in the 50-yard butterfly (31.67) to freshman Aleks Combs’ first-place time of 28.54.

To end the Bobcat’s first meet with a fight, junior Jessie Gregory was able to add one more win for FSU, completing the 200-yard IM in 2:17.63.
