YMCA Short Course Championships: Nicholas Caldwell, Susanna White Set YMCA Records

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 5. THE first evening of action at the YMCA Short Course Championships featured a pair of YMCA records falling in Fort Lauderdale.

Sarasota's Nicholas Caldwell twice lowered his 2010 YMCA record of 4:20.28 in the men's 500 free. First, he clocked a 4:20.04 in prelims before returning to win the finale in 4:18.01. Wilton's Robby Harder took second in 4:25.90, while Sarasota's Derek Pridemore wound up third in 4:27.44.

Lynchburg's Susanna White downed a 2003 YMCA record with a 1:58.90 in the women's 200 IM. That swim eclipsed Brittany Johnson's 2:02.23 from 2003. York's Hali Flickinger took second in 2:00.32, while Sarasota's Ashlee Linn finished third in 2:01.25.

Middle Tyger's Kendall Crawford won the women's 100 back in 53.98, while Montgomery's Sarah Reynolds finished second in 54.34. Triangle Area's Sabrina Benson placed third in 54.69. Countryside's Steven Zimmerman posted a 48.37 to win the men's 100 back. Lakeland Hills' Luke Papendick touched second in 48.44, while Cheshire's Connor Maher earned third in 49.05.

Sarasota's Taylor Katz topped the women's 500 free in 4:43.64, while teammate Danielle Valley finished second in 4:43.91. Middle Tyger's Haley Lips picked up third in 4:47.41. Triangle Area's Dominick Glavich touched out Wilton's Christian Higgins, 1:48.28 to 1:48.58, for the men's 200 IM title. Spokane's Coleman Allen touched third in 1:49.19.

Birmingham's Nikki Barczak posted a 23.21 to win the women's 50 free. White took her second podium of the night with a 23.26 for second, while Shannon Rauth of Upper Main Line rounded out the top three in 23.29. Triangle Area's Joe Bonk claimed the men's 50 free crown in 20.49. Auglaize Mercer's Josh Fleagle (20.57) and New Canaan's Jack Forese (20.62) completed the podium.

In relay action, Middle Tyger's Annie Gillig, Monica Milici, Lips and Crawford won the women's 200 medley relay in 1:44.56. Triangle Area's Kevin Rogers, Seth Connor, Glavich and Bonk topped the men's 200 medley relay in 1:32.16.
