By Takahisa Ide

TOKYO, June 15. SACHIKO Yamada slashed her own national record in the 800m freestyle today, to highlight action at the Japanese Long course national Championships in Tokyo, a meet that is also serving as the Trials for the Pan-Pacs and the Asian Games.

Yamada's time of 8:31.96 was almost six seconds faster than her previous record of 8:37.57. Yamada split 4:14.99 – 4:16.97. Madoka Ochi was a distant second in 8:38.90.

Veteran Sunichi Fujita had just as easy a time in winning the men's 1500m free. His time of 15:20.62 was nearly nine seconds faster than his nearest pursuer, Takashi Matsuda.

In semifinal action, the 200m butterfly proved very fast, both for men and women. Takashi Yamamoto led the men, as expected, clocking 1:57.66, nearly a second ahead of Yu Kondo (1:58.59) and Takeshi Matsuda (1:58.61).

Maki Mita cruised an impressive 2:09.51 to lead the field in the women's semifinals.

Kosuke Kitajima, who yesterday set national record in the men's 200m breast with a world-leading 2:10.64 – making him the third fastest man in history – glided to a 1:01.87 to top the 100m breaststroke semis.
