Xavier v. Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, January 19. THE Xavier men's and women's swim teams split their meet at Atlantic 10 rival Duquesne with the women coming out on top, 144-118, while the men fell by a narrow margin of 17 points, 139-122. XU's women touched first in nine out of 15 events and the men picked up four first place finishes.

For the women, freshman Kari Peglar took gold in the 200 backstroke, touching first with a time of 2:08.14 and came in first again in the 500 freestyle (5:05.37). Peglar also teamed up with junior Mary Catherine Mahon and sophomores Martha Cutter-Wilson and Elaina Suba to finished second (4:03.35) in the 400 medley relay.

Freshman Lindsey Barton touched first (10:35.70) in the 1000 freestyle event with Peglar coming in second (10:36.98). Suba took first place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.68 and Cutter-Wilson got a gold for her 1:08.40 performance in the 100 breaststroke.

On the men's side, senior Matt Krouse teamed up with freshmen John Buckley, John Roof and Nathan Green to take first place (3:34.38) in the 400 medley relay event. Krouse also touched first in the 100 backstroke (54.41) and placed third in the 200 backstroke (1:58.04).

Roof two more first place finish when he touched first in the 100 butterfly (53.65) and the 200 butterfly (1:57.17). Sophomore Mickey Hafertepe took second place (54.47) in the 100 backstroke, behind Krouse, and also placed second in the 200 backstroke event with a time of 1:57.46.
