Wyoming vs. Northern Colorado

LARAMIE, Wyoming, December 4. THE University of Wyoming Cowgirl Swimming and Diving team defeated the University of Northern Colorado Bears, 179-117, this afternoon in Laramie.

The victory brings the Cowgirls overall dual record to 7-0, and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference. The loss drops the Bears to 8-2 overall on the season.

"I think we did really well today considering this is finals week, it was very nice to have the guys there to support them," UW assistant swimming coach Matt Leach said. "I think our distance events are really starting to come around."

The Cowgirls began the meet placing first and second in the 400 medley relay and never let up. The UW ‘A' team consisting of Kenzie and Lauren Hewson, Nikki Finnesand and Stephanie Vint placed first with a time of 4:02.07, while the ‘B' team of Jehan Atoe, Meghan Swirzcki, Leah Roesler and Paige Fischer placed second with a time of 4:04.64.

Wyoming then went one-two-three in the 1000 freestyle with Krisetn Flachbarth placing first with a time of 10:54.68, followed by Kasey Robinson with a time of 10:55.72 and Vint with a time of 11:18.19.

The Cowgirls continued their dominant performance in the 200 free again placing first, second and third, Roesler set the pace with a time of 1:57.25, followed by Fischer with a time of 1:57.84 and Lizzie Justice with a time of 2:00.77.

In the 100 breaststroke UW's Lauren Hewson placed first with a time of 1:07.21.

Coach Leach was very impressed with the time of Whitney Taylor in the 200 butterfly in which she placed first with a time of 2:10.63. Leach said her time was the fastest she has swam that event this season.

In the 50 freestyle Morgan Hartigan and Kenzie Hewson placed first and second with times of 24.36 and 24.53, respectively.

In the 100 freestyle UW's Finnesand placed first with a time of 54.02.

Lauren Hewson picked up another victory for UW in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:26.59.

Cowgirl Robinson grabbed another win for UW in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:20.36, which was ten seconds ahead of her closest Bear competitor.

In the 100 fly Cowgirl Roesler set the pace with a time of 58.37.

Cowgirl senior Vint placed first in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:41.83

Finishing up the swimming portion of today's dual was the 200 freestyle relay in which the Cowgirls ‘A' squad of Hartigan, K. Hewson, Finnesand and Mackenzie Norlin placed first with a time of 1:39.27.

In today's diving competition Northern Colorado's Kelley Schmeckpeper-Cook set the mark on both the 1-and 3-meter springboards with scores of 280.35 and 251.48, respectively. Following Schmeckpeper-Cook were the three Cowgirl divers of Amanda Fay, Carolyn Wallace and Jade Lubeck. On the 1-meter board Fay placed second with a mark of 258.75, followed by Wallace with a mark of 229.05 and Lubeck with a mark of 225.23. On the 3-meter board Wallace placed second with a mark of 231.00, while Lubeck's mark of 222.38 placed her third and Fay placed fourth with a mark of 221.93.

"I think this is a chance for our athletes to see where they are and it is good for them to see where they need to improve," Leach added.

This dual was the final action for the Cowgirls before the winter break. The Cowgirls and Cowboys will return to action on, Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011 against the UNLV Rebels at Corbett Pool, beginning at 12 p.m.
