Wyoming, SMU, North Texas Double Dual Meet

DALLAS, Texas, November 9. THE Cowgirl swimming and diving team split a double dual meet by beating North Texas but falling to SMU, the 10th ranked team in the nation, while the Cowboys lost to SMU, Friday night at SMU's Perkins Natatorium in Dallas, Texas. The Cowgirls beat North Texas 80-33 but lost to SMU 66-47. The Cowboys fell to SMU by a score of 141-99.

The Cowgirls are now 2-1 in dual meets on the season while the Cowboys fall to 0-2. SMU's women earned their first two wins and are now 2-0 while their men improve to 3-0. North Texas' women fall to 1-6 on the season.

"I am very proud of the way both teams competed against two very good SMU teams tonight," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "The women gave the tenth ranked team in the nation a great meet and the men battled hard against a team that was the first team left out of the top-25 poll. We had some great swims and will take a lot of positives from this meet. We didn't back down and went right at some great teams."

The Cowgirls took first place honors in three individual events and broke a school record in a fourth event. Sophomore Megan Evans, the reigning Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Week, had another great day and won the 200 breaststroke (2:19.03) and broke the Wyoming 400 IM record with a second place finish (4:26.52). Her time in the 400 IM breaks Mabry Fiddler's previous record of 4:26.83 which was set in 2001. Her 200 breaststroke time is the fourth fastest in school history.

The Cowgirl divers had a very good night which was highlighted by taking the top-two spots in one-meter diving event. Senior Brittany Wainwright took home first place honors with a score of 253.35 and sophomore Emily Huth placed second with a score of 248.05.

The other first place finish for the Cowgirls came from freshman Stephanie Vint in the 200 butterfly. Vint turned in a time of 2:07.16, the fourth fastest time in Wyoming history.

Freshman Lesley Young also had a notable performance in the meet as she swam the tenth fastest time in Wyoming history in the 200 breaststroke and placed third (2:22.97).

The Cowboys won three events on the night which was highlighted by a great showing in the 1000 freestyle by a pair of Cowboys. In that race, sophomore Robbie Hilton swam a first place time of 9:37.66 and sophomore Matt Jones swam a second place time of 9:52.27. Senior Sam King came away with a first place finish in the 400 IM by swimming a time of 1:53.84. The other first place finish for the Pokes came from junior Matt Urich who swam a time of 1:50.67 in the 200 butterfly.

The UW swimming and diving team will travel west across Interstate 35 Saturday morning to open the Mountain West Conference dual season in Fort Worth against the TCU Horned Frogs. The dual will begin at 11 a.m. (MT) at TCU's University Recreation Center.
