NEW COMMIT: Distance freestyle specialist Robert Mitchell will make his way from Napa, Calif. to the University of Wyoming with a verbal commitment to join the class of 2023.

The two-time Winter Junior National qualifier does his club swimming with Terrapins Swim Team and capped off his long course season with three lifetime bests at the Far Western LCM Championships. At the Far Western SCY Championships in April, he posted six personal bests and was the silver medalist in the 500 free (4:33.39).

He told Swimming World:

“I am happy to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Wyoming to further my academic and athletic career. I want to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for all of the support over the years. Wyoming is a special place and Coach Dave, Coach Jim, and Coach Harmilee have a program ready for the national stage. I can’t wait to be a cowboy!!”

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:43.56
  • 500 free – 4:33.39
  • 1000 free – 9:31.73
  • 1650 free – 15:53.68

Mitchell will add more depth to Wyoming’s distance training squad when he arrives on campus in the fall of 2019. He will have one year of overlap with top returning Cowboy Seth Borgert, the 1650 runner-up at the 2018 WAC Championships. Under first-year head coach Dave Denniston, Wyoming won their first conference title in 59 years last season.
