Wyoming Diving Excels at Air Force Diving Invite

LARAMIE, Wyo, February 3. THE University of Wyoming diving team finished with 14 top-five finishes over the weekend at the Air Force Diving Invite en route to picking up four new qualifiers for the 2004 NCAA Zone “E” Diving Championships.

In Friday night’s 3-meter competition, Saara Haapanen led the Cowgirls with a third place finish of 450.35. Three Cowboys placed in the top-five of the event. Adam Miller placed second with a score of 489.30, Kevin Bretting placed third with 485.70 and John Lynch placed fourth with 474.50. Haapanen, Miller, Bretting and Lynch all finished with Zone qualifying marks in the event. Emily Keefer also qualified with her sixth place score of 442.45 in the event.

In Saturday’s competition, Miller claimed the lone Wyoming first place finish of the meet on the 1-meter board. His score of 297.45 edged Lynch’s second place score of 294.20. Bretting placed fourth in the event with a score of 274.25.

Both Haapanen and Emily Keefer finished in the top five of thewomen’s 1-meter competition. Happanen placed fourth (258.35) andKeefer finished fifth (234.75).

In the platform dive, the Cowboy trio of Miller, Lynch and Brettingfinished in second, third and fourth place with respective scores of382.00, 381.60 and 344.60.

Haapanen turned in a new school record with her second place finishin the platform dive scoring 319.25. Channing Kimball finished thirdin the event with a score of 295.75.

On the weekend, the diving team had eight scores that enter theall-time top-ten diving records at Wyoming.

Thus far, six Wyoming divers have qualified for the 2004 NCAA Zone“E” Diving Championships. Miller, Bretting, Lynch, Haapanen,Keefer and Shea Boyle will all compete for Wyoming in Oklahoma City,Okla. Mar. 11-13.
