World University Games, Water Polo: Women’s Preliminary Matches Begin

BELGRADE, Serbia, July 2. FOUR matches in the women's bracket opened water polo action at the World University Games.

China started the tournament with an 11-8 triumph over Hungary. China's Sun Yu Jun and Sun Ya Ting led the way with a hat trick each as China connected on 11 of its 22 shots. Hungary stood on the shoulders of Barbara Bujka's hat trick, while converting only 8 of its 30 shots.

Russia dominated Japan, 12-3, in the second match of the day. Russia won with a balanced attack as four players (Alexandra Antonova, Olexandra Karpovich, Ekaterina Tankeeva and Ekaterina Zelentsova) collected two goals each. Russia scored on 12 of its 35 shots. Meanwhile, Shino Magariyama turned in a pair of goals for Japan as the team only hit the back of the net on 3 out of 21 shots.

In the third match, Australia upended Italy, 11-9. Rowena Webster was unstoppable with five total goals to account for nearly half of Australia's offensive output. The Aussies drilled home 11 out of 31 shots. Silvia Mott provided the bulk of scoring for Italy with four goals as the team connected on 9 of 23 shots.

Canada crushed Serbia, 9-3, in the final match of the day. Monika Vazeos paced the Canadian's with a hat trick, while Canada knocked in 9 out of 34 shots. Nastasja Knezevic, Natasa Vezilic and Izolda Masic accounted for the three Serbia goals with one each as the Serbians hit on 3 of 30 shots.
