World University Games Day 3

IZMIR, Turkey, August 14. DAY three of the 2005 World University Games panned gold for the United States in women's 800 free relay and the men's 200 im.

The relay squad of Lauren Medina, Mary Hill, Ashley Chandler, and Leah Retrum touched the wall at 8:05.92. New Zealand finished second and France third.

Eric Shanteau won the 200 IM in record time for the Games with a 2:00.13. In fifth place was another American, Doug Van Wie.

In the women's 400 free, Romania's Cameila Potec missed breaking the meet record from 1987 by four one-hundredths of a second. Ashley Chandler and Alyssa Kiel, USA, finished eighth and ninth.

In the men's 100 breaststroke Oleg Lisagor of the Ukraine beat the rest of the field by just over a second clocking in at 1:00.73. Kevin Swander, USA, was second, 1:01.74.

Great Britain's Liam Tancock took the men's 50 back in a meet record time of 25.50. There was a tie for third between the United States Matt Grevers and Japan's Masafumi Yamaguchi. They touched in a 25.61.

Megumi Taneda of Japan won the women's 200 breaststroke in a close race with the United State's Rebecca Soni. The pair finished with a 2:27.81 and a 2:27.84, whew!

Russian Evgeny Lagunov beat out the rest of the field for a victory in the men's 100 free. He finished in 49.52 seconds.
